"MSFD is a relatively new European directive. Its implementation struggles with fragmentation and challenges at national levels. This means that criteria, including threshold values, methodological standards, and proper representation of the MSFD descriptors, should be periodically reviewed and amended in the light of scientific and technical progress.
JPI-O S4GES is a strategic joint action framed in the European JPI Oceans Initiative and will address scientific contributions to make the assessing process effective and efficient. It will then be articulated in three main lines of activities: i) Knowledge sharing towards the determination of Good Environmental Status (GES), through a series of workshops; ii) Joint integrated monitoring approaches, that will take advantage of all state of the art techniques and existing infrastructures; and iii) Test beds and augmented observatories, that will introduce new infrastructure for near real time monitoring at sea.
Science can contribute in revising or introducing criteria, apply risk-based approach, and provide rigorous definitions and estimates of the Good Environmental Status (GES)."
