"The spoke 7 will follow four general principles that guide its actions:
1) Maximum cross-relationships: first task of spoke 7 is to communicate, enhance and share with the International audience and Italian society the scientific contents that will emerge from the six thematic spokes of the National Centre for Biodiversity (NBFC).
2) New languages for communication and teaching: to achieve the above targets, the standard methods of science communication and teaching are no longer adequate. It is necessary to identify new languages, formats and methods of communication that reach a larger portion of public opinion and new audiences, especially those stakeholders which have never been exposed to scientific content related to Italian biodiversity (from industry to young children), to make the central messages of the NBFC truly visible, popular, and shared.
3) Tangible and quantitative impact: the actions of communication and public engagement in science in the NBFC must not have an abstract or ephemeral character, but concretely make a difference in the various sectors of intervention, leave a permanent legacy at the end of the project and be monitorable and quantifiable at each step, according to international parameters. For this to happen, it is necessary to dialogue with the population to identify and jointly target the most effective measures to combat the loss of biodiversity.
4) Evidence-based policies: Spoke 7 will pursue the idea that political decisions - from local administrations to central government, from European institutions to international organizations - must be taken in the light of available scientific evidence and through a constant institutional dialogue between the scientific community, the territories and the social partners."
